RACIAL PRIDE
TINY JOHNETTA KNOX

I'M PROUD to be a Negro,
You may scorn me if you please,
But my race is what it is today,
From prayer on bended knees.

From Africa's sunny climate
To this land our fathers were brought
As slaves, to work for nothing,
But faith in God they were taught.

That faith was well rewarded
When the toll of freedom did ring,
That gave us a chance with others
To compete in everything.

In less than a century of freedom,
Our children are reaching the heights,
Surpassing most endeavors
And fighting for their rights.

So what care I if my color
Is a varied shade of tan,
I'm still one of God's children,
I'm equal to any man.
