Doxology of Dandelions
Marian Shapiro

Thank god for you
sturdy dandelion,
you break out, scatter
your insistent seed.

Mowing you down does no good
whatsoever. Your roots
are stronger than sharp machetes.
Monarch of weeds, I count

on you to press through driveways,
plant yourself in cracks of stone
retaining walls, persist
into our day.
