The Language of Man
Daryn O’Patry

the language of man,
the words
we were meant

to speak
but have yet
to learn

are found in sleep.

when the world slumbers
under a night sky
rapt in dreams

our breath
beats
one united rhythm

it’s there true language is found.

close eyelids softly

is how
we should view

the world
one another.
under a downy veil of repose

the language is seen.

the letters rest timeless
raindrops
beneath ancient stones

layering elemental
riverbeds invoke an eternal,
comforting swoon

into mouths that try to form but can’t.

the discourse of man
will be found
when we prevail

the art of living
controlled
breaths and conversation

while absorbing stars.
